Berlin – It’s been quiet around Tokio Hotel for a long time. Bill and Tom Kaulitz (25) basically moved to California over night. There they worked on their fourth studio album “Kings of Suburbia”, which combines electro-beats with instruments and turns it into club music. An interview.
Why did you move to Los Angeles?
Why did you move to Los Angeles?
Bill Kaulitz: Because we reached a point where we felt overwhelmed. We had to get some distance between us and the whole Tokio-Hotel-Hype, to find out what we really want out of our life. Our career had to wait to make it possible for us to clear our head of everything.
Did you really find the anonymity in California that you longed for?
Bill Kaulitz: Yes. In the beginning we didn’t even really move into Los Angeles, but lived out of the city. It gave us the chance to completely disappear – but we also didn’t really go out in the beginning and therefore spent most of our time at home.
Tom Kaulitz: People stare at us here much less than they do in Germany. But being spotted isn’t really the problem.
Bill Kaulitz: Exactly. What’s really bad is when people stand in our gateway or follow you with their car – to some extent it almost bordered on being unhealthy. In the US we just don’t get confronted with such things anymore.
Then there is no danger of you ending up like Britney Spears?
Bill Kaulitz: Every human being goes through a rough patch once in a while – you can’t avoid it. You start to question your life or your career. You simply have to try and keep it out of the public eye, or the media is going to blow it out of proportion. It wasn’t like we didn’t have a reason to disappear out of the public eye. When this promotion and release cycle starts again, it could definitely happen that in one and a half years I’ll just go: “I can’t take this anymore. I need a break.”
Theoretically you could just break-up (the Band). Or aren’t you made for a “normal life”?
Bill Kaulitz: I can’t live well with, but also not without the fame. On the one hand, I love being on stage and making music. On the other hand, I struggle with not having a private life. So, there are moments where I curse our success. But Tokio Hotel is the love of my life.
Do you ever want to trade places with your drummer Gustav Schäfer and your bassist Georg Listing, who aren’t in the public eye as much as you?
Bill Kaulitz: Of course they do have it easier in some aspects, than we do. They still live in their hometown. The loss of their privacy was never such a big topic for them as it was for us. They’re really glad about that. They probably really don’t want to trade places with us.
Do you really never get jealous of them?
Tom Kaulitz: Everyone plays their part in the bad, that’s just how it developed. We don’t fight about things like that. There was never any jealousy or envy.
I really doubt that brothers never fight.
Bill Kaulitz: Sometimes our fights get really intense. When that happens, it gets so bad that all others just leave the room.
Tom Kaulitz: But after two hours everything is okay again.
Bill Kaulitz: Because we really can’t imagine a life without each other. We’re basically one person. When we’re separated, something is missing.
But you do not want to live together, forever, right?
Bill Kaulitz: I think we will always live together in some way. Maybe we will live in two houses that are next to each other at some point, connected by a tunnel.
Tom Kaulitz: And Despite not having been on stage in the past five years, we still spent every single day together.
How does your everyday life in Los Angeles look like?
Bill Kaulitz: Tom is a little calmer than me. I like going out a lot. Actually I’m only partying.
Tom Kaulitz: We have a strange rhythm. We go to bed at around 6 or 7 in the morning. We see the sunrise every day.

Berlin - Ha habido silencio entorno a Tokio Hotel durante mucho tiempo. Bill y Tom Kaulitz (25) basicamente se mudaron a California durante la noche. Allí trabajaron en su cuarto disco "Kings of Suburbia", el cual combina el electro con instrumentos y lo vuelve en musica de clubs. Una entrevista.
¿Por qué os mudasteis a Los Angeles?
Bill Kaulitz: Porque llegamos a un punto en el que nos sentiamos abrumados. Teniamos que tener alguna distancia entre nosotros y todo lo relacionado con Tokio Hotel, para descubrir que realmente queriamos de nuestras vidas. Nuestra carrera tenía que esperar para hacer posible que se nos aclarara la cabeza de todo.
¿Encontrasteis realmente la anonimidad en California que anhelabais?
Bill Kaulitz: Sí. Al principio nisiquiera nos mudamos a Los Angeles, pero viviamos a las afueras de la ciudad. Nos dió la oportunidad de desaparecer completamente - pero tampoco saliamos mucho al principio asique pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo en casa.
Tom Kaulitz: La gente se nos queda mirando aqui menos que lo hacían en Alemania. Pero ser descubiertos no es realmente el problema.
Bill Kaulitz: Exactamente. Lo que es realmente malo es cuando la gente se queda en nuestro jardín o te sigue con su coche - hasta tal punto que llega a ser insano. En America no nos enfrentamos nunca mas con esas cosas.
¿Entonces no hay peligro de que acabeis como Britney Spears?
Bill Kaulitz: Cada ser humano pasa por un camino dificil una vez en la vida - no lo puedes evitar. Empiezas a cuestionarte tu vida y tu carrera. Simplemente tienes que intentarlo y mantenerte fuera del punto de mira, o los medios de comunicación lo van a magnificar todo desproporcionadamente. No fue como que no teniamos una razón para desaparecer del punto de mira. Cuando este circulo de promoción y de lanzamieno empiece otra vez, podría ocurrir definitivamente que en uno o año y medio solo diré: "No puedo mas con esto. Necesito un descanso."
Teoricamente, podríais romper la banda. O no estais hechos para una vida normal?
Bill Kaulitz: No puedo vivir bien con ni sin la fama. Por un lado, me encanta estar en el escenario y hacer musica. Por el otro lado, tengo que hacer frente a no tener una vida privada. Asi que, hay momentos en los que maldigo nuestro éxito. Pero Tokio Hotel es el amor de mi vida.
Quereis cambiar alguna vez el lugar de vuestro bateria Gustav Schäfer y a vuestro bajista Georg Listing, que no estan tanto en el punto de mira como vosotros?
Bill Kaulitz: Pues claro, ellos si lo tienen más fácil en algunos aspectos, que nosotros. Ellos aun viven en su ciudad natal. La pérdida de su privacidad no fue nunca un gran tópico para ellos como lo fue para nosotros. Ellos se alegran mucho de eso. Ellos probablemente no quieras cambiarnos los lugares.
¿Nunca les teneis envidia?
Tom Kaulitz: Todos juegan su parte en la banda, asi es como se desenvuelve. Nosotros no nos peleamos por cosas como esa. Nunca hubo ninguna envidia o celos.
Realmente dudo de que los hermanos nunca se peleen
Bill Kaulitz: A veces nuestras peleas son muy intensas. Cuando eso ocurre, se pone tan mal que los demas se van de la habitación.
Tom Kaulitz: Pero después de dos horas todo está bién otra vez.
Bill Kaulitz: Porque no podemos imaginar una vida sin el otro. Somos basicamente una persona. Cuando estamos separados, algo falta.
Pero no quereis vivir juntos, para siempre, verdad?
Bill Kaulitz: Creo que siempre viviremos juntos de alguna manera. Quizás viviremos juntos en dos casas que esten una al lado de la otra de alguna manera, conectadas por un tunel.
Tom Kaulitz: Y a pesar de no haber estado en el escenario en los pasados 5 años, todavia pasamos cada dia juntos.
¿Como es vuestra vida diaria en Los Angeles?
Bill Kaulitz: Tom es un poco mas calmado que yo. A mi me gusta salir mucho. En realidad soy el unico que festeja.
Tom Kaulitz: Tenemos un ritmo extraño. Nos vamos a la cama sobre las 6 o 7 de la mañana. Vemos amaneceres todos los dias.
